Everybody has foals or babies that they need to start or break! Since colts/fillies have a different way of communicating with others it is vital that we understand them when the time comes. Depending on the baby horse that you are working with groundwork is a must in building a good relationship with your horse!

Every horse needs to have a good relationship with their owner!
The type of groundwork that do with starting colts/fillies is the stop and go game. (For any type of groundwork you NEED to use a Clinton Anderson Halter; this has the pressure points that you need to communicate with your horse.) Since the colt does not know the importance of personal space or the importance of a strong leader you must show them how to go about doing this! Walk forward a couple steps and see if the colt is in rhythem with you and make sure that he stops when you stop. Even if you have to walk at a slower pace this is good for your horse to pay attention and stop when you do.

In order for you colt/filly to be ready when you want it's a good idea to start them at around 6 months of age!
Another exercise that you can practice with you horse is the Yo-Yo game this shows that he has trust in you. Any horse that you are working with needs to be able to respect you! Your horse needs to be able to know that you will take care of him and make sure that he is okay and safe!
Every horse needs a leader in the pack! Your horse needs to know that he can count on you and turn to you for direction! Most people that have horses do not know how to work with younger horses, you would just want to work with them like any other horse!
